Participant Spotlight: Lesley

Lesley is currently recovering from a total knee replacement. In this spotlight, we learn how working with her coach helped accelerate her recovery and how, just 3 weeks after her operation, she has already been discharged from the physiotherapy service. 

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m 65 years old and I had a total knee replacement on my left side 3 weeks ago. 

Why did you choose to join the Surgery Hero programme?

I was diagnosed with arthritis at 27 years of age and had a total knee replacement on my right side several years ago, but had some issues with pain during the recovery phase. I decided to join the programme on this occasion because I thought it would be helpful to have some additional support to keep me motivated with my preparation and rehabilitation.

How was your experience with the programme?

I found the app really easy to use and particularly liked the goal-setting approach the programme is built around. The learning modules were nicely structured and contained lots of really useful information for before and after surgery.

I found working with my health coach to be particularly beneficial. It felt like she was prepared to help me with anything that was going on in my life — surgery-related or not. It’s been just 3 weeks since my knee replacement and I’m up and about and have been discharged from the physio service already. I did notice that people around me who hadn’t prepared properly seemed to be recovering more slowly.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about taking part in the Surgery Hero programme?

I would absolutely recommend it. For me, it was an extra tool to support me through. It helps reassure you that you’re doing the right thing, and afterwards, you’ve got the benefit of someone there to support you when things might be difficult. I felt that I could rely on my health coach to support me with anything.
